Thirsty Thursday Eve - Bacardi Pineapple Rum

Another year, another cruise, another bottle of liquor to bring home from the duty free shop on Royal Caribbean's Utopia of the Seas.

Name: Pineapple Rum
Source: Bacardi
Style: Rum
ABV: 35%
Price: Two for $30
Volume: 1L
Price per oz: $0.44

For this new tradition I'm creating, it's standard practice to pick up something from the ship liquor store. The lack of taxes is nice, even if technically I could get it cheaper from some places near home (namely Costco). Last year, I got a bottle of mango tequila, plus a bottle of white rum and a bottle of black rum by Bacardi.

This year, we were in a bit of a time crunch to get back to our room and pack, so I just went with Bacardi again. They had the same 2 for $30 deal, and rum is never a bad thing to have. I didn't love the Bacardi black, and the standard "Superior" white you can get anywhere. Instead, I decided to grab one of the fruit flavored options.

They had coconut, pineapple, lime, lemon, and raspberry. If I want a coconut rum, I'm just getting Admiral Nelson or Malibu. Lemon and lime seemed interesting, but I think I'd rather just put a fresh squeeze of juice from an actual lemon or lime into a drink if I wanted that flavor. Raspberry in a rum just sounds.... wrong. That left me with pineapple.

It wasn't a bad idea. Just a couple of days prior, I had a nice tropical drink from the Tiki Bikini Hut on Nassau. It was a good drink, and it really fit the tropical Bahamas vibe. I could try to recreate it at home. I wish I had snapped a picture of the drink menu to remember what the drink was called and what all was in it, but I was overstimulated and it didn't occur to me then. Regardless, I had something I could try with the pineapple rum.

My wife is a picky drinker, and she unfortunately doesn't lot of tropical flavors. Mango and coconut in particular, she won't go anywhere near. With that drink from the bar on Nassau, I ordered it without coconut and she still didn't really care for it. I needed to explore some flavor options to see what I could do to get a similar experience with flavors she likes. I picked up two bottles of pineapple rum and stashed them in our luggage.

At home, I cracked open a bottle and tried it neat. Honestly, it was very good as is. At 35% ABV or 70 proof, this is still stout enough to taste like rum and not sugary syrup with a little bit of alcohol. The bottle explicitly lists the recommendation to "add to lemon-lime soda for a pineapple fizz." Luckily, we had some 7-Up on hand already. I mixed 2 shots into a glass with ice and topped it with the bubbly. It was surprisingly good. I at least wouldn't be stuck with something undrinkable should I be unable to come up with a suitable tropical cocktail recipe.

A pineapple rum punch seems to be an extremely popular option, but every recipe I came across used either coconut, lime, or both. Same boat, that isn't going to be something my wife will drink. I'll have to play around with it and see if I can create some combination to satisfy her particular tastes.

In either case, I'm very satisfied with the rum itself. The pineapple flavor is certainly present, undeniably so, but not overpowering or too sweet. The pineapple fizz recipe recommended by Bacardi was very good. And I feel like pineapple as a flavor goes with a lot more than something like raspberry. If you want to branch out with something besides the typical white, gold, or black rum, Bacardi pineapple is something of a novelty but still approachable enough that you won't be stuck with a bottle you'll never finish.
