Thirsty Thursday Eve - Kirkland Signature Tequila Blanco

I'm not big on tequila, but I do like to have some on hand for the occasional margarita or for my cousin who would never be caught dead without a bottle. Hence, cheap tequila from Costco is obviously the perfect solution.

I've tried to do a better job about keeping a wide variety of distilled spirits on hand recently. I'd personally be set with just bourbon and spiced rum the vast majority of the time, but obviously not everyone likes those specific styles. Add a little tequila, some vodka, and a few other styles, and I have a pretty decently stocked bar that could appeal to most guests.

The mango tequila was good, but it isn't exactly made for mixing. Unless you're making a mango margarita, it's a very particular flavor profile that isn't going to go with everything. Plus, it was a good enough spirit to stand up on its own. Most of the bottle ended up just getting served over ice, and I'm perfectly fine with that.

Instead, an unassuming and fairly neutral white tequila is a much better option for a variety of purposes. That's where Costco's Kirkland Signature Tequila Blanco comes in. At $26 for a handle, it isn't as cheap as the Kirkland Signature spiced rum or vodka that I normally keep on hand, but it also isn't as much as your standard brands of tequila either. Certainly reasonable enough to pick up a bottle without breaking the bank.

Costco does offer both a reposado and añejo tequila under the Kirkland Signature label, but they're more expensive per volume. When I picked up the blanco, the añejo was $19.99 for 1L and the reposado was slightly cheaper at $14.99 for 1L. The blanco is just barely cheaper per volume at $14.85 per liter, but I figure the additional size saves me the effort of having to make another trip. I assume the añejo is from a more premium distillery to command the higher price, but I'm curious to see how the reposado holds up against the blanco. Next time I go back, I may pick up a bottle for comparison. I tend to prefer darker liquors anyway, so I may like that better than the blanco, and 14 cent per liter is trivial.

I do need a good margarita recipe. It's the best use of tequila, and while the mix is fine, I would much rather make my own to avoid the preservatives and fine tune the flavor profile. The beer cart frequently has the Jose Cuervo canned margaritas, and the strawberry ones are particularly good. I would love to play around with natural ingredients and see what I can come up with for a homemade equivalent.

As much as I don't drink a ton of tequila, I can guarantee you it won't hang around in my liquor cabinet as long as the Southern Comfort did. If nothing else, I'll pull it out during family gatherings and start just mixing it with Cherry Coke Zero Sugar if it starts collecting dust. It's passable for someone who doesn't love tequila, and I'll use it more than the handle of gin I bought one time exclusively for Long Island Iced Tea. Stay tuned for the (potential) follow up comparison with the reposado.
