Runescape - It's Been a While

A lot has happened with Runescape since the last time I posted about it, over 3 years ago. I got max skills, a new skill came out, and then I got max again. The mobile beta that I was playing on saw a full release. It’s been a good time.

Now, bear in mind, this post is written WAY before being published. As my previous post indicated, I’m writing way ahead just because I have the time available. These details are based September 3, 2021 and the status of my account then. I can’t tell you where I’ll be once the post is public.

So, where am I now? My total level is 2865/3055 and I have both Magic and Invention at 200m experience. All of my skills are at least 99, and I’m working on getting skills to 120 when that provides extra benefit. Beyond working on those skills, I try to continue making enough money to afford bonds.

Compared to the most recent post, the way I play the game isn’t even the same anymore. I started at first with a single bond, and then I ramped it up to groups of three when I realized I could afford to keep it going. Now, I do Premier Club every year.

At the end of 2018, I tried it out with the Bronze tier Premier Club. That option was cheaper than the daily rate of doing three bonds at a time, and it gave me a slightly longer time frame of uninterrupted membership. Beyond cheap membership, it gives you access to the premier track for Yak Track events. That typically costs two bonds per event, on top of the price of membership. Most years recently have had two or three Yak Track events each. That’s up to six bonds per year that I’m SAVING, just by having Premier Club during Yak Track. Obviously, I’m not going to let those sweet rewards pass me by. With that, I’m significantly better off going Premier Club than buying membership straight out.

During 2018, I saved as much money as I could and bought several bonds. By the time Premier Club opened up for 2019, I had the 20 bonds required to purchase Gold Premier club. I bought that near the end of 2018, and I have maintained consecutive membership since then. To pad my currency pouch a little bit, I bought several more bonds than I actually needed to keep Premier Club for the year. At this point, I’m up to 50 bonds. I still try to buy up as many as I can during the dip between March and May, but that dip continues to rise. The cheapest they got in 2021 is about 22m each, so I need to set my target price a little higher.

To get a bead on bond price, and make sure I don’t accidentally miss those cheaper periods, I constantly keep offers on the Grand Exchange for bonds. I’ll have an offer at 22m, one at 23m, and one at 24m. That way, if they ever drop to 24m, I’ll notice the purchase and I can either bite the bullet and purchase at that price or gamble and try to wait for it to drop a little more. If I had to, I COULD afford them at current market rate, but that would be a huge upcharge over buying them at the lowest price of the year.
“Given my spotty history with Runescape, I’m not going to pony up the cash to play for a year when I might not want to play anymore for a while after just a few months.”
When I first bought a bond, I claimed I would never pay for a full year if I might stop playing after a few months. Clearly, I didn’t stick to that. However, I’ve been going for almost 3 years now, and I still haven’t wanted to quit. My interest waxes and wanes, but I do tend to stick with it and play more often than not.

I think that the benefits of Premier Club are greater than the risk of time lost if I were to stop playing. It’s the cheapest per day membership option available, and the Yak Track bonus makes it even better. Plus, I’m still just buying membership with in-game money. I make a point to spend that near the end of the year when I purchase Premier Club, and the money is gone. If I don’t really use it much, the money was already spent anyway. I just wouldn’t re-up the next year.

One convenient way to monitor how much I play is TimeHop and social media. I’ll tweet my time played, or my current skills. When I see that tweet again the following year, I’ll reply to it with updated figures. There are a few posts through the year that I can see how things have changed year over year. The year before Covid is probably the most I have ever played per day, and I have reduced significantly since then. I play enough to justify and afford membership, but not all day every day.

Right now, at approximately 10:00 AM on September 3, 2021, I have played for 428 days, 19 hours, and 31 minutes. I began playing 5,608 days earlier. That indicates that I made my account on Thursday, April 27, 2006 and that seems to check out.

I was afraid that getting max skills would be the point that I stop playing Runescape, but it just changed the things that I focus on. There is still a ton of game content that I’ve never touched. I started with Gargoyles to make money, then I migrated to Spiritual Warriors, and now I do Barrows Brothers. I started bossing some with a PVM group, and Jagex continues to release new bosses frequently. Maximum level just removed the threshold to reach a lot of this content.

I did finally satisfy my coffee mug and get 99 everything. Now, I guess I need a new mug.
